TunnelBear: Access Location Restricted Sites The Easy Way
I was surfing the internet as usual, and I found some sites that can be accessed only from some countries, mostly US or UK. So, I started thinking does it mean that I can’t access them from outside the allowed countries?
Well I don’t like when the answer is not good, So I used Google and searched on how to access blocked websites and stuff, some sites said something about changing proxy. It rarely worked for me and it was too slow, that’s not a good answer for me, so I had to find a better way to solve this. and guess what? I FOUND IT!
It’s a simple desktop application called TunnelBear. It DID solve that problem. More important, it works for all applications, not just the browsers or some applications that I have to change the proxy for them.
But just for curiosity, I wanted to see how it works. 😀
After installation. I found a new internet connection, and a new adapter in the device manager, that didn’t seem a good answer for me, and that is why I decided to see the command line of the running process using systeinternals process explorer (It’s like an alternative to task manager ), and I took a look at the running process called tunnel.exe and that was its command line
“tunnel.exe” –client –dev tun –proto tcp –remote xx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx –resolv-retry infinite –nobind –persist-key –persist-tun –ca “auth/ca.crt” –cert “auth/key.crt” –key “auth/key.key” –ns-cert-type server –verb 1 –management 127.0.0.1 5680–management-hold –auth-user-pass –management-query-passwords –comp-lzo –ping 10 –redirect-gateway def1 –dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8
I’d be a liar if i said i know what all that command means, but it seems to me that it uses its custom IP , DNS , and its own connection options to connect to the internet
However, there are some limits for the free users, your account has only 500 MB/Month , but you can tweet about it and get 1 extra GB for that monthHowever, you can Upgrade to a Giant for $4.99 /Month for unlimited bandwidth .
Another thing I should mention , That app requires .NetFramework 3.5
Download TunnelBear. (works for Windows and Mac)
